Unified Technical Concepts. Module 1: Force.
Technical Education Research Center, Waco, TX.
This concept module on force is one of thirteen modules that provide a flexible, laboratory-based physics instructional package designed to meet the specialized needs of students in two-year, postsecondary technical schools. Each of the thirteen concept modules discusses a single physics concept and how it is applied to each energy system. This module discusses the concept of force and forcelike quantities as they apply to four energy systems: mechanical, fluidal, electrical, and thermal. The forcelike quantities as discussed are force, torque, pressure, voltage, and temperature difference. Included with the concept module are eighteen application modules that discuss a specific application of a single concept in a single energy system, and contain a student laboratory exercise. Laboratory modules included are Gravity; Addition of Mechanical Forces; Addition of Torques; Mechanical Equilibrium in Structures; Stress and Strain; Tension in Wires and Cables; Atmospheric Pressure; Density, Buoyancy, and Specific Gravity; Hydraulic Jack; Manometers; Potential Difference and Charge Flow; Series and Parallel Voltage Sources; Electric Forces and Fields; Magnetic Forces and Fields; Lead-Acid Storage Battery; Thermometers; Temperature Differences and Heat Flow; and Thermal Stress.
