Factors Influencing Teachers' Decisions About What to Teach: Sociological Perspectives. Research Series No. 62.
Schwille, John; And Others
Sociological research on teacher decision making in curriculum and instructional development is reviewed. The Institute for Research on Teaching (IRT) shares a number of concerns with this research, including the question of who determines content, the extent to which content covered covaries with social class and sex, and teachers' conceptions of content. The Content Determinants research project considered the influence of parents, peers, principals, tests, textbooks, and established objectives in teacher decision making. Other studies included explore the influence of compatibility, costs, obligation, urban and rural school districts, centralized and decentralized programs, teacher isolation, and teacher change in assignment as possible factors in teacher decisions. Implications for further research are made. (Author/CJ)
