Newspaper Bargains: Food I and II. Teacher's Guide [and] Student Materials.
Kenne, Linda
The document contains student materials and teacher's guides for two units in which students analyze grocery advertisements in newspapers. The units are appropriate for language arts and mathematics classes in grades 4-6. Objectives for Unit I include discriminating between an advertisement and a news article, identifying foods for sale in ads, and recognizing different types of food coupons. In 13 activities, students make collages of foods and their prices; identify abbreviations for pound, ounce, package, and bottle; analyze "cents-off" and in-store coupons; and calculate the cost of a family meal. Unit II objectives are identifying prices of food items, determining unit prices, comparing unit prices, and organizing costs and needs in preparing a shopping list. In ten activities students determine the amount of food needed for a party or dinner, figure the cost of food by determining the unit cost, and select the better buy by comparing unit costs of similar food items. The teacher's guides include objectives, suggestions for implementation, reproducible pre- and posttests and worksheets with keys, and student progress charts. (KC)
