Compare and Save: A Capsule to Help You Get More for Your Money. Teacher's Guide [and] Student Material.
Clark, Sally; Estes, Cindy
This document provides teaching guidelines and student material for a unit intended for use in junior high mathematics, consumer, or home economics programs. Time allotment is from four to six hours of classroom time. The objectives of this capsule are to enable students to identify reasons for comparison shopping, recognize the opportunity costs of comparison shopping, and to evaluate the choices that a consumer has in making purchasing decisions. The student material is divided into three sections, focusing on reasons for comparison shopping, purchasing decisions, opportunity costs, using coupons, and planning shopping. Each section begins with a story illustrating the point to be made, and contains four activities such as writing paragraphs, unscrambling words, identifying opportunity costs, making purchasing decisions, comparing prices for services, collecting coupons and figuring savings, doing mathematics problems, and sharing with the class. Two supplementary activities involve the student in researching or interviewing. The teacher's guide provides objectives, a materials list, instructions and directions, keys to activities and tests, copies of all worksheets and assessments, and a bibliography. (CK)
