I.D.G. Bulletin 1978/79.
Information and Documentation Centre for the Geography of the Netherlands, Utrecht.
The document focuses on the relationship of land and water in the Netherlands. Information, presented in expository, tabular, photographic, and cartographic form, is arranged in four major sections. Section I, which contains the bulk of the document, discusses water and landscape in geography; water in the Netherlands as a source of food, recreation, and transportation; water pollution; land reclamation projects throughout Holland; the role of water in town planning; and water engineering. Emphasis is placed on the strong influence of water in the Dutch landscape--a positive influence in the sense that it affords countless possibilities for economic development and a negative influence in the sense that it constantly threatens to overrun the land. Section II presents statistics on area and land use, population, and the Dutch economy. Section III, entitled "Brief Notes," surveys problems of transportation, river crossings, water engineering, and physical planning. A directory of water-related organizations in the Netherlands is also included. Section IV describes the aims and activities of the Information and Documentation Centre for the Geography of the Netherlands. (DB)
