Towards a Legal Education and Information Program for Native People. A Review of the Literature and Annotated Bibliography.
Kydd, Donna L.
This work emphasizes the culture and characteristics of native people as they relate to legal education and information programs and serves as a guide for designing and implementing these programs. The literature review stresses five program requisites: (1) community commitment to the program, (2) incorporation of traditional laws and customs in the curriculum, (3) accomodation of the learning styles of native people, (4) relevance of curriculum, and (5) flexibility of program structure. The annotated bibliography lists 143 entries alphabetically under the broad headings of history and culture, legal concepts, and educational principles. Subheadings include rural justice, culture and education, native legal concepts, rural justice systems, legal services, principles of learning, cultural influences, teacher training, curriculum development, and projects and programs. Canadian as well as U.S. literature, dating from 1926 to 1977, is covered in both review and bibliography. (JH)
