Activities and Programs for Handicapped Women at Leeward Community College.
MacGugan, Kirk
A study was conducted by Leeward Community College (LCC) in Fall 1978 to determine the social and psychological problems which are unique to handicapped female students. The study involved interviews with the directors of LCC's Handicapped Services Center and Women's Center and a survey soliciting information from LCC's 40 handicapped women students. The directors were asked to estimate the number of handicapped women on campus, indicate the variety of handicaps suffered by these women, identify their special needs, evaluate the usefulness of present services in meeting those needs, and discuss potential programs or services that might be created. The students were asked to indicate their occupational and educational goals, list the problems they most often encountered as handicapped women, and discuss the programs which would be of greatest value to them. Major findings indicate that while both directors felt that physically handicapped women could be better served, the directors disagreed as to how many of these students were on campus. The problems identified most frequently by the 20 survey respondents related to transportation, family and sex life, and the lack of economical, accessible housing. The survey report analyzes findings, discusses implications, and explores the double discrimination suffered by handicapped women. A bibliography is provided. (JP)
