Portage Parent Program: Parent Readings [and] Instructor's Manual.
Boyd, Richard D.; And Others
The collection of readings for children was developed as part of the Portage Project which serves approximately 150 rural preschool handicapped and nonhandicapped children by providing them with a home teacher who instructs parents on how to teach their children. Readings cover the following topics: definitions of terms to know; the home teaching process (Portage Project procedures); basic areas of development (socialization, language, cognition, self help, and motor skills); instructional objectives; reinforcement; misbehavior; behavior change; timeout procedures; family involvement; activity charts; modeling; shaping and chaining; importance of record keeping; teaching aids; correction; target behaviors; small steps in learning; expansion; play; household materials and routines to use in teaching; use of time; and teaching guidelines. An instructor's manual includes sections on models of parent training, parent-child interaction, the Parental Behavioral Inventory, procedures for recording parent behavior, the parent teaching process, presentation of the parent program, strategies for initiating and maintaining discussions regarding the parent readings, and generalization and maintenance. Appendixes to the manual contain a copy of the Parental Behavior Inventory and an outline of the purpose, procedure, and parent behavior outcome for each of the specific parent readings. (SBH)
