The readings and activities in this competency unit focus the attention of language arts program advisers and primary grade teachers on language instruction/development that is student-centered instead of program-centered. The first section of the unit shows teachers how to clarify their expectations and objectives concerning language instruction and how to coordinate their efforts with those of other teachers and parents. The second part of the unit shows teachers how to plan and keep records of responsive language activities. This section also includes information on the grouping of students. The third section of the unit discusses teacher movement away from dependence on texts and toward the effective use of children's language experiences. The readings in the unit are augmented with 24 written assignments for teachers, including the development of lesson plans in a responsive language program, comparisons of teaching behaviors, methods of evaluation, and periodical self-assessment. A bibliography is included, along with an appendix containing eight lesson plans and descriptions of language experience activities. (RL)
