This guide informs women about the apprenticeship system and how it operates, about apprenticeable occupations, and provides background on the problems that women sometimes encounter in seeking apprenticeships. In the first section, Women and Apprenticeship: An Overview, barriers to women in apprenticeship--such as sex discrimination, inadequate preparation, and age--are examined. Another section, on apprenticeable occupations, describes occupations in construction, manufacturing, service, and expanding opportunities for apprenticeship. A section on how to become an apprentice outlines the apprenticeship application process. Following this, the system itself is analyzed in terms of the role of federal and state apprenticeship agencies and committees, and the final section summarizes federal laws and regulations affecting apprenticeship.
