The document presents the teacher's guide for three teaching modules focusing on sexism and racism with an emphasis on women and minorities as social groups. It is part of a grade 5-6 unit which also contains a student workbook and three filmstrip/cassettes. The overall objective is to increase students' awareness of sex and race discrimination and to develop their motivation and ability to challenge institutional inequities. The guide is presented in six chapters. Chapter I introduces the modules, discussing rationale, organization, intended outcomes, skills to be developed, use of the inquiry-oriented approach, and the importance of the emotional climate of the classroom. Chapter II consists of background readings, including essays on sex stereotypes, contemporary sexism and racism, statistics on sexism and racism in the 1970s, and ten ways to analyze children's books for sexism and racism. Chapters III through V contain the three teaching modules, entitled Stereotypes and Their Uses, How Sexism and Racism Operate, and How to Fight Sexism and Racism. Each module is divided into twelve lessons organized around a single concept. The lesson states the idea, obectives, teacher preparation needed, and time allotment, and suggests teaching procedure, activities, and sometimes extension activities. Replicas of student activity sheets are included. The final lesson in each module contains discussion questions and the script for the filmstrip/cassette. The final chapter offers two annotated bibliographies, one for teachers and for students. (CK)
