Major goal statements, speeches, and excerpts from workshops at a conference on women in government are presented. An introduction explains that major conference goals were 1) to provide a forum for discussion for students, educators, and professional women in government and politics; 2) to increase awareness of opportunity in government careers; 3) to discuss issues of concern to women pursuing careers in government; and 4) to consider effects of legislation in overcoming barriers and creating opportunities for advancement of women in government. Three papers are presented. In "Women in Government Leadership and in International Affairs," Betty Southard Murphy reviews women's rights from the 1600s to the 20th century. In the second speech, Ethel Walsh summarizes "What Title VII has done for Women." She stresses that the major impact of this legislation has been to draw attention to organizations persisting in discriminatory employment practices. In the final speech, "The Federal Civil Service as a Career," Eva Poston explains advantages of working in a government agency. Also included are excerpts from conference workshops on topics including running for political office, climbing the career ladder, international careers, and state and local government careers.
