Educational innovation in Switzerland is discussed according to complexity and flexibility of educational policy, the amount and nature of innovations, and the place of Swiss educational innovations in international education. Areas in which innovations have occurred include school organization, course content, and teaching objectives and methods. Specifically, innovations encompass reorganization of the final years of compulsory education, experiments in early instruction of the second national language, modernization of mathematics instruction, reorganization of diploma level schools, and new federal laws improving vocational training. Conclusions about the impact of educational innovations are that: (1) despite the complexity of educational policy in Switzerland, the cantons welcome innovations in most fields; (2) because of the federal nature and pluralism in Switzerland, educational innovation moves slowly; (3) the economic recession and population decline should not affect innovation; and (4) Swiss educational innovation owes much to international organizations.
