A Descriptive Study of the Ex-Campers Completing the Eckerd Wilderness Program Between January 1, 1972 and December 31, 1975.
Carter, James D.
In an effort to assess program effectiveness, demographic data derived from institutional records on 335 emotionally troubled youth who had participated in the Eckerd Wilderness Program were analyzed in terms of interview data derived from a random sample (32 males and 32 females) of youth enrolled in the Eckerd camps March 1, 1968- December 31, 1971. The static instrument yielded data on age and school grade at entry, sex differences, race, referring agency, family, number of convictions prior to camp entry, etc. Results of the interview indicated ex-campers felt: camp staff took a special interest in them; a desire to become better persons; trips, problem solving sessions, family conferences, and pow-wows were helpful while in camp; the Eckerd program was superior to other program experiences; failure to achieve personal goals was due to their own actions while achievement of goals was due to camp atmosphere; the most valuable skills learned were controlling temper, handling problems, talking out problems, and getting along with family; they would want to return to camp if in trouble again and would refer friends. Post-camp statistics on the ex-campers indicated: 37% received no assistance from camp personnel; 94% returned to school, averaging 1.6 years in school after release (21.6% graduated); during the first, second, and third years after release, 68.8%, 65.6%, and 68.8% respectively, had no legal convictions; 78% were currently employed, 17.2% married, and 12.6% divorced.
