The Mastery Learning Program at Durham College: Final Report.
Wire, Donald R.
In spite of the brief duration of the Mastery Learning Program at Durham College, this final report on the activities and outcomes of the project reveals several positive effects upon students and faculty. The report begins by providing background data on the college, an independent junior college serving a population of economically disadvantaged minority men and women from rural areas in North and South Carolina and Virginia. It then discusses the outcomes expected during the program's first year of implementation, which included the development of complete sets of learning materials based on Bloom's Mastery Teaching Strategy for eight courses, their use for one quarter, and their evaluation. Next, the activities are described that were carried out to accomplish the objectives and the results of a comparison of the academic achievement of students taught by mastery and conventional approaches are provided. Program objectives and activities are presented as they were planned for the second year of the project, and the actual accomplishments of the prematurely curtailed program are described. After a discussion of the overall achievements and shortcomings of the program, the report addresses the issue of the dissemination of documents and information about the program and reviews the program's budgets and funding. A report evaluating the program's first year is appended. (AYC)
