A nationwide survey of the academic affairs officers from a random sample of community and junior colleges was conducted to determine the strengths and weaknesses of curriculum development at the two-year college level. The survey instrument listed 33 items related to curriculum planning, content, and evaluation. Respondents were asked to indicate on a five-point Likert scale the extent to which these items represented current curriculum development practices. Major findings, based on 184 responses, indicated that community college curriculum planners responded well to technological advancement and to the vocational needs of adults. Other strengths included good working relationships with local media and a healthy recognition of the importance of motivation in the learning process. There was a general lack, however, of a conceptual framework for curriculum planning based on needs assessments and of evaluation techniques tied to articulated objectives. In addition, respondents indicated that few attempts had been made to utilize behavioral and social science theory and that little had been done to help students with acculturation problems. Faculty members had not received the assistance to cope with diversity among students and had, for the most part, ignored cognitive processes and student fears.
