Palomar College Enrollment-Staff Growth: 1967-1979.
Rose, Thomas A.
Palomar College (PC) enrollment data and personnel records from 1967 to 1979 were examined to determine: (1) whether PC staff had grown at a rate equivalent to the growth in enrollment; (2) whether the various segments of the PC staff had grown at comparable rates; and (3) whether these segments had grown at rates equivalent to the growth in student activity as measured by weekly student contact hours (WSCH). For the purposes of the study, enrollment counts were divided between day and evening students, and WSCH data were broken down by day and evening contact hours, credit and non-credit hours, and census week accounted and actual accounted contact hours. Classified and certified staff were categorized by their contract status as full-time, part-time, or hourly personnel; classified staff were further identified as administrators, middle administrators, and direct student contact staff. The data revealed that full-time staff grew at a slower pace than enrollment and that varying growth rates were experienced by different segments of the staff--the number of classified staff grew more rapidly than the number of direct student contact staff, which increased more rapidly than the administrative segment. Most staff segments grew more slowly than comparable measures of student activity. The study report provides tables organizing data and includes a discussion of the factors affecting enrollment and staff growth. (JP)
