Bibliography of Reading Materials for Basic Reading and English as a Second Language.
Literacy Volunteers, Inc., Syracuse, NY.
This bibliography of adult and teenage reading materials was prepared primarily for use by literacy volunteers in member organizations of Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. Literacy volunteers are trained to use in their tutoring materials that fill immediate needs of the students in their everyday living. Under each reading level reading materials are categorized as follows: consumer economics, community resources, government and law, health, and occupational knowledge. Reading levels, as determined by the READ Test (the testing device of Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc.) were used for categorizing books. The approximate corresponding reading grade levels are also indicated as a further guide for the tutor. Programmed materials, instructional aids, and series books are listed separately in most cases. Among the additional materials are the following: English as a Second Language periodicals, picture books for oral English, survival skills materials, readings in corrections, migrant readings, dictionaries for basic reading students, newspapers and magazines, mathematics materials, spelling materials, and poetry. An alphabetical listing of books and a directory of publishers are included. (SW)
