Geographie du francais et de la francite en Louisiane (The Geography of the French Language and Character in Louisiana).
Breton, Roland J.-L.
This study, based on the 1970 U. S. census, concerns Francophones and French influences that are evident, particularly in Louisiana. Four aspects of the question are treated: (1) linguistic minorities in the U. S., especially those of Hispanic and German origin; (2) the history of Franco-Americans; (3) the present state of French in Louisana; and (4) the typically French character of Louisiana. Historically, Franco Americans fall into three groups, namely, the descendents of the Acadians who settled in Louisiana, 19th century immigrants who settled all over the U. S., and the Quebecois who migrated to New England. The discussion of the French in Louisiana covers the three periods in Louisiana history, the three geo-cultural regions of the state, and a demographic study. With regard to the French language, the study treats the varieties of French spoken today, French usage, geographic distribution and language, and the character of Acadiana, or French Louisiana. The Final section of the study deals with the universally-recognized French character of the region, a character that goes beyond language usage. Particular attention is given to French national characteristics, typically French geographic traits and markedly French religious, linguistic, cultural and political influences. Numerous maps and tables are appended. (AMH)
