English Function Catalog and Rolebooks. Method for Determining Language Objectives and Criteria, Volume IV.
Setzler, Hubert H., Jr.; And Others
An English function catalog and rolebooks are presented as part of the communication/language objectives-based system (C/LOBS) that supports the front-end analysis efforts of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. The C/LOBS project, which is described in 13 volumes and an executive summary, functions as a subsystem of the instructional systems development approach currently in use in the TRADOC school system. C/LOBS was designed to develop a systematic set of procedures for determining terminal skill objectives and their supporting enabling objectives for foreign language training. Five job/duty positions and three languages were selected for field testing and system validation. The "Function Catalog for English" presents a list of common American English sentences, patterns and phrases used to accomplish each function with the six function categories. The "Rolebooks for English" provide information relating to the social dimensions of the language. The rolebooks indicate differences in the style, tone, and formality of the language used in different job situations. It is an assumption of the system that in any conversational exchange in the target language the jobholder's language behavior can be assigned to one of the six technical roles presented. The jobholder's choice of structures and vocabulary items will reflect the difference in roles. (SW)
