This document contains one of two monographs produced by a three-year project designed to study mid-career changes and the educational and training needs of these adults. A companion monograph, CE 025 228, describes the characteristics of mid-career adult students. Divided into four chapters, this monograph deals with support systems organized at the community level to serve those persons who wish to re-enter postsecondary educational institutions for continuing or recurrent education and retraining in occupational skills. Chapter 1 discusses the need for mid-career educational opportunities and describes the type of community and student studied. Based on the findings of seven community case studies, chapter 2 offers a number of considerations that are intended to assist in institutional planning for the mid-career student clientele. A summary of findings from the seven community case studies is found in chapter 3. More detailed reports on the individual case studies are appended. After identifying transportable ideas from the case studies, chapter 4 presents a set of models which may be useful in planning community support systems for the continuing education and training of mid-career adults.
