Careers and Disabilities: A Career Education Approach.
Gardner, David C.; Warren, Sue Allen
Divided into nine chapters, this textbook for educators is designed to deal with selected, special problem areas in career education for the handicapped. Chapter 1 introduces the major concepts of the career education movement and its implications for programming for handicapped persons. Chapter 2 provides an overview of disabilities, while chapter 3 reviews and discusses the many barriers to employment of handicapped persons. Problems and techniques of vocational assessment are discussed in chapter 4. Citing recent research, chapters 5-7 discuss the special implications of learning theory and personality theory for training special needs students for the world of work. Using examples from recent studies and current programs, chapter 8 outlines how schools can find the answers to such questions as "How do we get started?" and "Where do we initiate curriculum changes?" Finally, in chapter 9, the authors summarize and reflect upon the progress made toward adequate career education for the disabled student. (BM)
