This study examines several genres of Nuyorican literature (works by and about Puerto Ricans in New York) in an effort to demonstrate how authors interpret the political and social contexts of their environment. Works analyzed are the dramas "Short Eyes" and "The Sun Always Shines for the Cool" by Miguel Pinero and "Noo Jork" and "The FM Safe" by Jaime Carrero; an autobiography, "Nobody's Hero," by Lefty Barretto; a novel, "In Nuevo York," by Nicholas Mohr; and a collection of poetry, "La Carreta Made a U-Turn," by Tato Laviera. The authors interpret the New York milieu in the five boroughs but with primary emphasis on El Barrio. The political statements of Nuyorican literature are revealed as being critical of the manner in which the United States government creates situations which make people dependent, stifle growth, and aid in individual destruction through crime, poverty, drugs, and a lack of self worth and morality. The major social themes addressed include New York City and its impact on individuals, the barrio experience, and a critical attitude toward Anglo society. The writers all express displeasure with their society. They are unanimous in their portrayal of a human condition in desperate need of improvement. (Author/MK)
