Research in Mathematics Education.
Shumway, Richard J., Ed.
This volume represents an effort to develop a definitive reference work on research in mathematics education. The reference is divided into two parts. Part 1, on the research process, focuses on problems of research methods and their relevance to research in mathematics education. Part 1 also introduces the beginner to some of the issues and problems in the research process, stimulates further reading and study, and raises issues that are of fundamental concern to both the beginner and the experienced researcher. Part 2, on research problems, deals with the identification of critical, productive problems for researchers in mathematics education. In general, the problems are categorized in a psychological framework. Authors of Part 2 were asked to organize their chapters about this general outline: (1) status of the research, (2) trends - where people seem to be going with research, (3) the big issues of research, and (4) some specific hypotheses that are important, timely, and promising.
