Prepared for social work students and social service providers, this text is designed to help non-Indians expand their understanding of Indian customs, cultures, and life styles with the purpose of achieving greater transcultural appreciation and, consequently, more effective social work practices appropriate to Indian communities. Information is organized under five topical areas, each with a detailed table of contents, numerous questions for study and discussion, and a brief bibliography for related reading. Section I describes the unique and diverse lifeways of Southwest Indian tribes and discusses the social problems of Indian children and families. Section II discusses Indian extended families, clan systems, and tribal social networks and their impact upon tribal members' beliefs and behavior. Section III analyzes the practice concepts of the dual perspective, motivation, and stabilization in relation to serving Indian people. Section IV provides historical and current information on the federal-tribal relationship, the related legislation and policies, and its significance in the lives of Indian people. Section V provides an overview of child and family welfare services available to Indians. Two maps are appended showing Indian lands and cultural areas. (JH)
