This study investigated the relationship between levels in Piaget's hierarchy of cognitive development and Loevinger's model of ego development. The data were examined for indications of cognitive prerequisites for development of ego levels. Sixty women, 30 in each of two age groups (18-21 and 35-47) were administered the chemicals and correlation task and the Washington University Sentence Completion Test. The results indicated that cognitive prerequisites for ego development exist, but that high cognitive development does not necessarily insure high ego development. A comparison of group scores showed that ego development is related to age and appears to increase with age, but that cognitive development remains unchanged over the period from young to middle adulthood. Additional analysis of formal operations revealed that schemata develop asynchronously and that decalage is unrelated to age but is significantly related to operational level. (Author/MP)
