Assisting Students to Succeed in Higher Education--Part 1. Connections, Vol. 2, No. 1.
American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Washington, DC. Urban College and University Network.
In this newsletter focusing on helping college students succeed, an introductory essay by David Shroyer examines experiences with developmental studies at the University of New Orleans and issues in serving underprepared students, especially problems of attitude on campus. Suggestions for success include: an informal support network, a team approach, weekend staff retreats, a file of approaches to reaching developmental students, careful forecasting, and evaluation and advocacy. Brief case studies are given of these programs: California State University at Los Angeles, the University of Louisville, Housatonic Community College in Connecticut, the University of North Florida; the University of North Carolina, Queens College in the City University of New York, and Donnelly College in Kansas. A list of ERIC references, an explanation of the Urban College and University Network, part of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and an introduction to the National Coordinating Council of Educational Opportunity Associations are included in the issue.
