Gerontology Instruction in Higher Education.
Peterson, David A.; Bolton, Christopher R.
Gerontology instruction at the college and university level is analyzed in light of various developments, major issues confronting the field, and specific needs of faculty and administrators. Chapters discuss: growth of interest in aging and gerontology; growing awareness of the aging in higher education; the literature of gerontology education; issues, outcomes, administrative structures, credentials, curriculum, and faculty development in gerontology education; development of gerontology education programs; models for gerontology instructional programs; and gerontology education in the future. Four model programs, ranging from the community college to the doctoral level, are offered. The book is designed for college and university administrators, for faculty members, for government personnel concerned with social and health services manpower development, and for graduate students and others in gerontology education. The final chapter suggests several trends in gerontology, dealing with such issues as: the establishment of a common field of gerontology; the end of program proliferation; expansion of gerontologically related activities; a refinement in gerontology education that will require specification of the skills needed by professional and scientific gerontologists; and establishment of a firm research base for adequate documentation that can be used to promote policy favorable to older persons.
