It is postulated that an understanding of the arts is essential in liberal education. In an essay Richard Turner states that on many campuses there is little effort made to integrate the liberal and creative arts in the curriculum. Some critical factors are suggested for achieving a strong position for the arts in liberal education, and a group of program descriptions and bibliographic references are provided. The programs described are in ethnic arts at the University of California at Los Angeles, architecture and history at Hiram College (Ohio), creative arts within the liberal arts curriculum at Western Michigan University, art appreciation through self-instructional packages at John Tyler Community College (Virginia), critical studies (the relationship of the arts and humanities in the 20th century) at the California Institute of the Arts, arts and humanities management at Mount Vernon College (Washington, D.C.), the Institute of Film and Television at New York University, and a program in the creative process at the George Washington University (Washington, D.C.). Very brief descriptions are given of 12 other programs around the country. (MSE)
