Snyder, Sarah
A booklet for limited English speakers on renting housing provides information on searching for housing, finding the right place, considerations before signing a lease, and relations with the landlord. Cartoons, questions about the message in cartoons and narrative passages, checklists on things to consider, and the phonetic pronunciation of key words are presented. Specific topics include the following: (1) charges for utilities, and other costs such as parking space fees or trash pickup; (2) what is meant by a security deposit; (3) renting a room, an apartment, a studio apartment versus those with one or two bedrooms, a house, or a mobile home; (4) ways to find housing including looking on one's own, using managing agents, real estate agencies, and rental referrals; (5) abbreviations used in classified ads; (6) considering priorities such as the need for space, special services, or privacy; (7) things to consider in checking out the neighborhood, the apartment, and the building; (8) provisions in the lease including rules for tenants, the right of the landlord to enter the renter's home, and renter's responsibilities; and (9) problems that occur and recourse through enforcement on housing codes.
