The Mann-Suiter Developmental Screening Tests were administered individually to 79 German and American first grade students in their native languages. The subtests, which examined minimum skills necessary for school success, were used to develop a profile of each child's strengths and weaknesses in visual, auditory, and language areas. Children who were doing well in school passed all or all but one of the subtests. Nine of these children were able to read when they entered first grade. The children whom teachers said were "in trouble" scholastically nearly always failed three or more subtests, with most failing five or more subtests. The individual profiles of the students were shared with the classroom teachers who indicated that these profiles and the test findings were useful in determining the need for special placement, further testing, team conferences, and altered teaching techniques. A comparison of German versus American test results revealed similar patterns of strengths and weaknesses. (Author/RL)
