This guide involves a synthesis of three inservice models (Glasser's Reality Therapy, Gordon's Teacher Effectiveness Training, and Focus) with the author's knowledge of and experiences with teaching to develop an effective classroom strategy for helping students. This guide concentrates on strategies for dealing with three problem behaviors: hostile-aggressive, passive-aggressive, and withdrawn failure image. Strategies include: (1) holding democratic classroom meetings to set up classroom rules, and consistently enforcing them; (2) establishing friendly, caring relationships; and (3) insisting that children "own" their problems. Children are viewed as individuals who are capable of solving their own problems, learning, and helping each other to learn. Each problem behavior is described with its causes and step-by-step plans for resolution. Several case studies are included. (Author/NRB)
