A study explored changing family patterns among married middle and upper middle class women students over thirty with family intact. Eighty-seven homemaker-students enrolled at the Universlty of Maryland, College Park campus, during the spring semester, 1975, responded to a written questionnaire regarding their family patterns of decision making and the division of household labor. A change (since their return to school) was found in all areas of decision making, the greatest being in home management and family relations, with the respondent perceiving the change positively and viewing her husband as perceiving it negatively. Discussion of decisions had improved with fewer emotional outbursts and an effort to understand, listen, and discuss significant decisions with each other more frequently. Family members helped more often with the management of the home, while the husband assumed more responsibility by entertaining the children, grocery shopping, and preparing breakfast. Moreover, positive change far exceeded negative change within the family since the respondent had returned to college.
