A literature review was conducted to examine the current status, advantages, and cost-effectiveness of individualized instruction in industrial training in over 30 companies and training specialists in 11 electronics and computer-related firms were interviewed to determine the current use of individualized instruction in employee training programs. Media utilization, instructional development methods, general trends, and predictions for future training methods in these companies were also examined and compared. Results indicated that in-house training is growing in importance as a result of a shortage of experienced staff; feedback, evaluation, and revision are the weakest aspects of instructional design schemes used in the electronics industry; training of manufacturing skills will increase rapidly and use individualized instruction extensively; and individualized instruction, which is cost-effective and useful in handling problems created by geographic dispersal of employees, is a medium of high potential growth for training in technical subject matter.
