Tracing Members of a Panel: A 17-Year Follow-Up.
Clarridge, Brian R.; And Others
A search, primarily by telephone, in 1974 successfully located 97.4 percent of a sample of 10,317 subjects who had graduated from Wisconsin high schools in 1957. This high response rate was obtained partly because the original study incorporated several diverse types of identifying items which could lead to the future location of the respondents; but the methods used in the search also contributed to the success, as did its organization and management. The 1974 search was even more successful than a search of the same group in 1964. Ten stratified random samples were formed and searched, one at a time, so that a representative sampling could be assured in case the search, or the ensuing study, had to be terminated before the completion of the total survey. Personnel for the search were carefully trained and motivated. They worked on two-hour shifts. Names and 1964 addresses were obtained from computer tapes. Routine procedures and forms for recording the results of telephone calls were established. State tax records and credit searches were not used. Examples are given of some of the difficult or unusual but successful searches. (Author/CTM)
