Panel Discussion Outline: The Vietnam Veterans' Needs and Assessments.
Little, Robert H.; And Others
The comments of six panelists are presented as transcribed at a workshop conducted by the National Association of Veterans Program Administrators in order to examine the special needs of Vietnam Era veterans. First, Robert Chapman discusses the employment, counseling, and information needs of disadvantaged veterans, including disabled veterans, veterans with alcohol and drug problems, and incarcerated veterans. Next, Regina Watson examines the problems encountered by minority veterans in seeking employment and describes how peer outreach counseling at community colleges can boost the self-esteem of minority veterans and assist them in receiving necessary developmental education. Brenda Millirons then describes the second-class status of women veterans and calls for the increased participation of women in veterans' programs and organizations. Next, Lee McLeod discusses the special assistance under-educated veterans need to complete their education under the G. I. Bill, and then Walter Lipe explores the role that college veterans' coordinators can play in aiding students in finding employment through state agencies and area industry representatives. Finally, Robert Chapman discusses the Job Opportunity, Political Action, and Welfare Assistance Programs sponsored by the Student Veteran Association at Thomas Nelson Community College, Virginia.
