From Here to Internality: A Function of Learning Groups in the Community College Classroom.
Mink, Oscar G.
This two-part learning module was designed to acquaint community college instructors with the use of group reality therapy and learning contracts in the promotion of self-awareness and self-determination among high-risk students. Part I discusses the social concept of behavioral change and describes how internal/external counseling can be incorporated within learning groups to reinforce the student's sense of self-control over his/her academic achievement. Included in this section are: (1) a discussion of the criteria necessary for pair and group formations; (2) examples of get-acquainted exercises to be used at the beginning of group activities; (3) criteria for good group leadership; (4) an examination of the psychology of internal and external loci of control; (5) examples of external to internal shift strategies in which student progress is monitored through individualized learning contracts by group peers; and (6) a discussion of instructor attitudes that are essential to group success. Part II presents suggestions for the use of this group therapy in the classroom and provides ground rules for learning groups, criteria for effective behavioral contracts, and strategies for encouraging participation within the group. The module includes pre- and post-tests, exercises, and a bibliography. (JP)
