Assessing Student Opinions of the Learning Experience: An Instrument Packet.
Roueche, John E.; And Others
A set of instruments are provided that were designed to assess student attitudes toward their learning experience in terms of course content, teaching methodology, instructor effectiveness, and the extent of learner involvement. Specifically, the six instruments assess: (1) quick general impressions; (2) student opinion of course content; (3) student opinion of instructional methods; (4) personal reactions to various classroom activities; (5) student evaluation of his/her own input; and (6) student opinion of the instructor. The booklet, organized around the six instruments, first discusses the administration of the instruments and makes suggestions about instructions for the students. The semantic differential technique employed in the quick general reaction form (#1 above) is then discussed, followed by interpretation information to be used in analyzing responses to each of the instruments. An outline is then presented which shows the relationships among the six instruments and enables the instructor to categorize the attitude assessment of the forms according to what is being taught, how the course is being taught, who is teaching, and how involved the student is. Finally, the booklet provides forms to be used in tallying responses to each of the instruments. (JP)
