Accessible Buildings for People with Severe Visual Impairments.
Aiello, James; Steinfeld, Edward
The report describes research and recommendations regarding architectural and environmental accessibility for visually handicapped persons. A three phase study was conducted in which visually handicapped persons helped identify mobility problems and evaluate tactile floor signals to identify areas of imminent danger (staircases, dropoffs, and extreme level changes). Detailed methods and findings are presented for each of three phases. A section on recommendations addresses obstacles; warning signals (for intersections, ramps, and doors); and direction finding information (tactile characters, elevators, visual landmarks). Drawings and tables are presented throughout. (CL)
