A New Communication Course for the Counseling Curriculum: Achieving Dialog.
Seiquist, Jack
Achieving Dialog, a model course in dyadic communication for close relationships, is described and presented as a new course for the counseling/human development curriculum. Research findings from a comprehensive evaluation of the Dialog course are summarized. The societal need for the course is indicated, and the educational challenge to counselors is pointed out. The paper suggests that a complementary relationship can exist between Achieving Dialog and the Interpersonal Communication course offered by many Speech departments. Both courses are seen as desirable if students are to attain a reasonable level of dyadic communication competence. Appendices contain materials used in the Dialog course, a bibliography, and an abstract of the study which evaluated the course. (Author)
