Old Age in an Urban Setting: Coping Strategies, Reciprocity, and Personal Networks.
Wentowski, Gloria J.
The interactional aspects of support within social networks of the elderly were investigated with a particular focus on the role which reciprocal exchanges play in defining the nature of the support channeled along the links in the network. The sample consisted of 50 adults, 55-83 years of age, living in an urbanized region of North Carolina. Interviews with the subjects covered several content areas including biographical background, adult biography, current circumstances, and data on the individual's support network. Results indicated that the daily rhythm of the lives of the subjects was founded on relationships of mutual concern and obligation between them and their kin, their friends, and their neighbors. Whatever form the relationship took (dyad or group), the support given centered around three main areas: (1) provision of goods and services contributing to daily functioning and household management; (2) provision of emotional support; and (3) special services supplied during times of crises or exceptional stress.
