Early identification of psychosocial problems and early intervention with cancer patients can be beneficial to patient rehabilitation. This report focusses on: (1) developing and implementing an effective "model program" of psychosocial intervention for adult cancer patients; (2) evaluating the impact of intervention in ameliorating cancer patients' psychosocial problems; (3) developing procedures for documenting intervention; and (4) developing predictive criteria for patients who are psychosocially "at risk." A retrospective study of 136 cancer patients whose psychosocial problems were systematically surveyed yielded findings which were used to develop, implement and evaluate a psychosocial intervention model.
