Cathie, Shirley B.
Project SELECT (Strategies for Equalizing and Linking Education and Career Training) is a means of promoting sex equity in vocational education and career preparation. SELECT consists of three handbooks for middle or junior high school students, teachers, and parents and a resource booklet entitled "Women at Work." These materials are designed to help show that significant change is occurring in vocational education due to the increased number of women now working outside the home and other changes taking place in American society. This document is the handbook for parents, which includes the following information: background information on project SELECT; changing career choices and options for both males and females; barriers in vocational education which relate to sex-role stereotypes; the role of parents and the home in influencing the attitudes of youth toward work, school, and the larger society; myths in sex-role stereotyping; sex equity laws; and occupational information and employment statistics. Also included are some ideas and resources that parents can use in helping their children make unbiased career plans. (BM)
