Oswego County Board of Cooperative Education Services Youth Employment Training Program, 1978. Final Report.
Belkin, Allen; Dries, Cindy
The goals of the Oswego County (New York) Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) Youth Employment and Training Program (YETP) was to improve job-readiness posture and self-concept of unemployed youth and in-school youth. Two types of classroom training supported the major learning activity, which was work experience. These activities consisted of modules developed in the three areas of job-readiness, pre-vocational skills, and work experience. The purpose of module I was to develop positive work attitudes and knowledge; module II trained participants in two of thirteen vocational areas. Work experience (module III) was available in the health, office, recreation and child care, maintenance, and other occupational areas. The Vocational Opinion Index was used to pre- and post-test attitudinal factors of job readiness. Results showed significant improvement, especially in the areas of attractions to work and ability to deal with new situations and people. Results of pre- and post-testing using the program-developed Self Appraisal Survey to assess self-concept showed significant improvement for those with a deficient self-concept. Participants were also evaluated subjectively at various times by BOCES Youth Employment Coordinators, teachers, Work-Site supervisors, and assessment team members. (A ten percent program was also implemented and evaluated.) (YLB)
