An Ethnic Studies Guide and Resources Mannual for the Carolinas.
The manual contains ethnic studies units on the Indians of North Carolina and information for developing materials on other ethnic groups in North Carolina. Intended for intermediate grade students and teachers, the guide contains three major sections: background information, student manual, and information on ethnic groups other than American Indians. The background section discusses concepts of ethnic studies, methods for constructing dioramas, and presents a bibliography of books, periodicals, and filmstrips, and addresses of resource persons, museums and film distributors. Also, brief histories of the Southeastern Indians, Coastal Algonkians, Cherokees, Catawba, North Carolina Commission on Indian Affairs, Coharie, Haliwa, Lumbees, Waccamaw Siouan, Guilford Native American Association, and Metrolina Native American Association are provided. The student manual contains brief readings followed by answer questions. The major portion of the manual presents directions for learning activities such as an Indian cultural awareness quiz, language activities, dramatization of myths and legends, crossword puzzles, games, identification of plants used by Native Americans, Indian recipes, and weaving. A chart relates the activities to learning concepts and subject areas. The final section presents activities, readings, and bibliographies for Asian Americans, blacks, English, and Greek, Hispanic, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Italian, and Jewish Americans. The activities include directions for origami, a slave trade game, German recipes, and construction of a Mexican "Ojo de Dios." (KC)
