Beatie, Bruce A.
The two-part document provides background information on ethnic heritage and language schools (EHALS) in the United States as well as results of a survey and a directory of these schools in Cleveland, Ohio. Part I contains a rationale for community language schools, traces their evolution from the colonial period to the present, and summarizes the Cleveland survey. Student population is discussed in terms of enrollment patterns, language proficiency and background, and cultural background. The curriculum section characterizes class structure, curricular objectives, learning materials, and testing and grading. Biographical data on teachers includes sex and place of birth, length of residence in the United States and in Cleveland, amount of education, and amount of time spent in the classroom per week. Part II, the directory, lists 21 EHALS schools in Cleveland: Arabic, Armenian, Bengali, Chinese, Croation, Czech, German, Hebrew, Hindu, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian, and Yiddish. Information includes address, names of directors and teachers, a brief history, tuition fees, class hours, and visitation policy.
