Working with Handicapped Students: An In-Service Training Module for Counselors and Vocational Educators in a Community College Setting.
Miller, Susan W.
A sequence of four objectives is the basis of this in-service training module designed to assist community college vocational educators and counselors in carrying out legislation concerning handicapped students. The workbook first presents a list of terms and definitions needed to familiarize educators with the terminology relating to educating handicapped students. In addition to defining "handicapped" and "handicapped student," this section differentiates communicative and physical handicaps and identifies various learning disabilities. Relevant federal and state legislation are then discussed to provide a working knowledge of the community college's legal obligations toward handicapped students. This is followed by an outline of the curricular, administrative, and physical barriers which demonstrates the obstacles to success that handicapped students face at community colleges. The workbook concludes with a discussion of various strategies designed to help educators work successfully with handicapped students. Besides recruitment, placement, and employment strategies, this section discusses needed support services and methods for overcoming stereotypes. Worksheets and exercises are provided. (JP)
