Data were gathered on the 2,005 new and transfer students who entered Kapiolani Community College in Fall, 1979. These data, extracted from student applications, placement test files, and financial aid records, show that: (1) 61% of the students were female; (2) 43% were below the age of 19; (3) 88% were unmarried; (4) 60% had attended a public, Oahu high school; (5) the majority of liberal arts, public services, and unclassified students were attending part-time; however, 92% of the health services and 56% of the food/hotel services majors were attending full-time; and (6) over 70% of the liberal arts, business education, food/hotel, and unclassified students were new to higher education, while most health services (72%) and public services (89%) majors were transfer students. About the same percentage of students declared a liberal arts (44%) as a vocational (46%) major. Only 6% of the entering students received financial aid. Of these 126 students, 50 were in liberal arts, 45 in business, 18 in food/hotel services, 12 in health services, and one student was unclassified. The majority of students were awarded amounts under $1,000. Females received financial aid at a ratio of four-to-one over males. About 86% of the students took placement examinations. Of these, 50% revealed a need for a combination of basic mathematics and English courses. Tables comparing data by program area are included. (JP)
