The use of computers in Virginia's institutions of higher education is reviewed and the role played by data communications in the work of the institutions is discussed. In this paper, data communications is defined to mean the movement of information from one place to another without changing the value of the information. State plans for developing and managing the facilities for data processing in higher education are reviewed, as well as its current use, and some trends indicating future growth in this area are briefly discussed.
