The academic activity and occupational role of the university teacher is examined from a sociological as well as an educational viewpoint. The sociological focus is on the role the teacher assumes as dictated by the central concept on what a university teacher should be, including the types of relationships that surface from this central concept. On the educational side attention is given to the teacher-pupil relationship. Methods used in the study are staff interviews, a staff survey, and a student survey. Data centered on four academic departments: Classics, Pure Mathematics, Civil Engineering, and Psychology. It is noted that department size and subject matter had an effect on the teacher's relationship to his role. Part One (Activities) examines teaching, research, and external activities. Part Two (The Department and the University) discusses the role of the departmental head and resources, political authority and sanctions. Part Three (Student Perspectives) looks at the undergraduate view of the university teacher. In conclusion, the sources of variation and change within the teacher role is examined. The appendix contains the interview schedule and sample questions used with eight departmental heads along with other academic staff. A bibliography is provided. (LC)
